For the fans of the NDANI TV web series GIDI UP here are the concluding Episodes (Episodes 7 & 8). In both episodes Folarin, Yvonne’s sugar daddy’s PA goes headlong with her and things get nasty. Meanwhile Obi has to decide to go on with the proposal before him while some light appears in the tunnel for Tokunbo.  NEW MOVIE: A mile from home

There’s a mindset in the industry that only celebrated stars can make a good movie but the movie a mile from Home seeks to disprove that and from what I have seen from the trailer, I couldn’t wait to share it with you guys.

The story is about Jude, a university student who gets into a campus cult inorder to fulfill his desire for revenge but realizes that he’s made the greatest mistake of his life. Suku the capone makes it even more harder for him to escape from the group by making him the number two in the cult. Jude decides to stay away from home upon realizing that he has lost his freedom and by extension his future. But the curiosity of Deba, a brother to a UK based friend of his who just got into the university puts them both in trouble and Jude has to break a code in order to save Deba’s live but it puts the two of them in harm’s way

It stars new actors including Tope Tedilah, Eric Nwanso, Sambasa and Alex Anyalogu and has some very clean effects unlike the normal Nigerian movies.The gun shooting, the bullet holes, the bleeding and everything else connected with the film is done well so thumbs up to the editing and to the director Eric Aghimien. They even get to destroy a few cars in the process which means there is a lot of bad ass that goes down in the movie.Hills pictures is the outfit responsible for this movie.

Hey guys!!!

I have something for those of you who love the sensation of blood curdling screams and that fear factor that results when the guy with the knife is about to hack his victim. Yes folks, I am talking about horror movies here and I have two I want to preview. I know there are some of you who are squeamish about these things I won’t blame ya. But for those who enjoy it here are two horror movies coming out in Nigeria.

MOVIE: .ENCORE

Encore is a dark thriller directed and produced along with Mohammed Ali by Achor Yusuf a graduate of NFI (National Film institute).

The story revolves around a young Geology geek who leads his friends and study pals into an expedition in a jungle. But the jungle has a troubled past courtesy of the tribe that lived there centuries ago and it comes up to haunt our friends including the Geology geek who descended from this tribe. The movie promises to thrill you from what has been seen in the trailer and it’s a complete deviation from the norm in Nigerian film making what with the mixture of new faces with a sprinkling of veterans and some nice technical styles like the special effects, the make up and the shooting of outdoor night scenes during the day, something rarely done in Nigeria.

The film has a cameo from Joseph Benjamin and stars Belinda Effah, Andrew Douglas, Iyke Arinze and Sidney Diala among others. It’s tentatively set for release in April. If you want to know what went down in the forest keep a date with Encore.

MOVIE: JIM AND JOAN

Now this is a project I have been following due to its peculiarities. Jim and Joan is a horror movie that is unlike many of the hack and slash that Hollywood engages in. The film which was produced and directed by CJ Obasi is unique in that it has only two characters and the actors who portrayed them are new. The story revolves around a runaway voodoo priestess who is led to a young man and they become a couple. But trouble ensues as the young man gets trapped in her seduction which is laced with a heavy dose of black magic and leads to her dominating him with a very sinister agenda in mind. This is CJ Obasi’s debut feature film as a director and he hopes to achieve great things with the movie. The film premiered internationally last year at the Eko film festival and will be released in the USA and some foreign countries once the retouching of the film is complete. It stars Jean Abbey and Ella. Uche.

Unfortunately there is no trailer at the moment but I will bring it here when its out.

 Hi Guys!!!

Sorry I have been MIA for a while now (had loads of work to deal with). A lot of things have been happening, so let me start with the African movie academy awards (AMAA) nominations ceremony which held over the weekend in Malawi.

The Kenyan film “Nairobi half life” that looks at the crime scene in that city led with 9 nominations while Nigeria’s ‘The meeting’ and the Ghanaian film “The contract” followed with 6 nominations each.

MOVIE:ASSASSINS PRACTICE

If you are a fan of thriller movies then Assasins Practise could be for you.The movie will be in Nigerian Cinemas from February 22,2013.The movie was directed by Mario Andrew Ukoko,a British based Nigerian Filmmaker and has done the cinema rounds in the UK in the African Film Festival in London last year.

Assasins Practise which features Justice Esiri,Kate Henshaw,David Nnaji(Dear Mother),Uche Monye and Eve Pearson tells the story of a setup gone wrong.A failed Stock broker gets an assasin to set up his suicide inorder to get the insurance company where he has a life insurance policy to pay out to his wife and daughter. He intends to send them on an holiday to get them away from the house when the staging would be done(NOTE: His wife and daughter dislike each other).

But some snags pop up 2 robbers to try their luck on the Stockbroker but they find out that he has a death wish,so no money.While trying to decide on the next move the Assassins show up but she is a psychopath who enjoys killing people for real( after getting some kicks from making them suffer) and he only gets to know that when the deed done is done.,as this happens a lot of secrets starts coming out.Now he has to do something to stop the Assassin.The Movie was shot both in the UK and Nigeria.Dele Ajakaiye teamed up with Andrew Ukoko to produce the movie. Hey People!!!

If you were asked to describe hell I wouldn’t blame you for adding Nigerian TV in the mix as the only thing they’ve succeeded in inspiring is nausea.Cable TV is now a necessity rather than a luxury and even advertisers are wondering if they are not shouting at nobody when they advertise on the small screen and it seems the TV stations don’t give a …. about what’s happening as long as the ego keeps on rolling in.

But have no fear as help is on the way courtesy of a small band of producers who couldn’t stand doing nothing so put their genius into work.The result is a small but growing band of web series catching peoples imagination everywhere. Most of them have to be viewed through the internet but some of the producers are trying to optimize their products for the mobile web and will soon be on TV.

Here’s a sampling.

HOW SHE LEFT MY BROTHER:

This is a 7 episode web sitcom that explores the story of a young girl

Ejiro with a videolog who is upset about her elder brother’s new girlfriend and does everything to break it while undergoing issues of her own.Produced by Tinsel director Victor Sanchez and featuring Ivie Okujaiye,Chris Attoh, OC Ukeje, Vanessa Kanu and Eku Edewor, the story is told from Ejiro’s perspective as she communicates through her webcam with her subscribers her everyday attempts at this heartbreak issue and other things that plague her.

Each episode is an average of three and a half minutes (The highest is 5mins) so it shouldn’t take much of your bandwith. Though it was produced and released some months ago it’s still worth a look. Want to know if Ejiro is succesful?

LEKKI WIVES:

Now this is one that is exciting me personally. Lekki wives is a 13 episode drama series that looks at the lives of 5 different women in Lagos and what they get up to in the name of making a living and having fun. The series produced by Blessing Egbe(2 brides and a baby) has gotten a lot of positive reviews and for now is on the web only(If you see the trailer you will understand why). The series has been watched 50000 times and being bought 2000 times as at three weeks ago(13 episodes go for $11, an episode is $1) and am sure much more would have downloaded. FLOWER GIRL

Anybody looking for their favorite tinsel star Damola Adegbite who played Telema Duke in the TV series would be interested in this. Flower girl premiers on Valentine’s day February 14. A romantic comedy about a shy florist (A flower seller) who enlists the help of a movie star to help her win back her long time boyfriend who dumped her because he’s not ready for marriage and couldn’t stand her pressure (Yeah tell me about it). Though it may sound like a cliche it stars new faces not the usual suspects i.e. Eku Edewor, Chuks Chukwujekwu, Patrick Doyle and Teni Aofiyebi.

 audition TIPS by Jovi Baabs

Hi guys!!!

I have noticed a lot of interest in the audition notices that I paste here and I really appreciate that. But it looks like a lot of you want some tips on how to perform well at an acting audition or even acting in general based on the questions people have been asking me. Well here are some tips I have garnered from my years of experience as an actor in the industry which could help you.

 1. Work on your confidence and self-esteem.

This is important as if you don’t have it how can you successfully portray another character? Producers don’t like people with low self-esteem so work on it. NB- a girl got a part that was previously reserved for a star at an audition that I was involved in all because of the way she exuded her self-confidence( NB- Please try not to be arrogant and state that as self-confidence!)

2. Try and download scripts from the net and act out the roles before someone or before a mirror. Just don’t overact. Acting is supposed to be done in a way that the audience should not know that you’re acting.  (This is the bane of so many Nigerian actors) Tip remember when you’re portraying a character you’re supposed to be living his/her life not acting it. Work on this and you’re on your way to the top as new producers with new sensibilities are gradually replacing the old school producers who believed in shouting and screaming.(More on this later)

3. Be ready for any thing when it comes to auditioning. Sometimes when an artiste speaks the producer already knows if he/she wants him/her in the production before the reading of the script. Some auditions rely on the popular reading test but some producers choose to be creative in how they audition. A simple chit-chat could be an audition so be careful how you portray yourself.

4. Work on your diction.Most producers prefer artistes that can express themselves well so if you don’t have good diction go and work on it. (NB-Don’t go bringing a fake Yankee wannabe accent. People can see through that immediately).

5. When presenting pictures bring one that is studio based as motion pictures depict a lack of seriousness. The pictures must preferably be in three-quarter mode or full (Don’t bring head shots). The less of photo-shop (editing) in your pictures the better for you and get the most recent picture you have. Producers want to see you in your most natural state.

6. Dress well

I know that the industry promotes informality but please don’t wear a pair of slippers or some dirty clothes to an audition (Trust me I noticed a few who did this. Needless to say that they were not auditioned). Dress well even while informally.(If you choose)You wouldn’t dress terribly to a job interview would you? 

7. Be patient. Most Nigerian auditions are notorious for starting late so be ready to alter your schedule for the day. Try and make it at least two hours to the start of the audition so that you can leave quickly.

8. I know things can get hectic at auditioning but please that’s no reason to be a cry baby. This gives the impression that you won’t be able to cope with pressure when you’re on set. I’m not in favor of disorganized auditions but zip up your mouth when you feel like complaining (This cost me a part in a TV series last year)

 Hope this tips help you when you’re going to the next audition.

MOVIE REVIEW: 

THE MEETING by Jovi Babs

Okay folks here is the review of the movie THE MEETING as promised. Sorry it took this long.

When going to the cinemas which is usually a special occasion due to its astronomical price here I tend to stick with what will give my money the greatest satisfaction i.e. Hollywood hits. Whenever a Nigerian Movie is on the cinema circuit (Except for those that I screen write like the FIGURINE and MARRIED BUT LIVING SINGLE) I remember what happened to KAJOLA an animated movie which turned out to be a wack job, had cinema patrons protesting and the Cinemas subsequently removing it from it’s lineup and decide to stay safe with the Americans. But when I saw the trailer of THE MEETING on TV coupled with the background of the screenwriter Tunde Babalola  who has writing credits on the British soap coronation street, I had to see what the new Nollywood cinema guys were up to and fight my fearsabout dropping my hard earned money down the drain. Two hours later I was happy I did it.

Rita Dominic

THE MEETING is a romantic comedy that was produced by Rita Dominic and directed by Mildred Okwo. But you wouldn’t know that from the trailer as I guess we will have moaned about yet another romantic bore and ignored it.Good decision from the producers.

Ok here is the story. Makinde Esho, a middle aged Lagos based executive flies into Abuja to have a meeting with a government minister about authorization to build some telecoms mast sub station. His boss(Jide Kosoko) is on his neck about the importance of the contract to the company(As if the world will crash without it) and our super exec thinks he will walk into his meeting, get the authorisation and fly back to Lagos that same day right? Wrong! Because he ends up having to face the minister’s secretary Clara Ikemba (Rita Dominic) who frustrates him at every attempt to see the minister which makes him to spend days in Abuja, something he didn’t bargain for and almost turns his life upside down but meets Ejura a resident of Abuja who makes his forced stay there memorable despite his initial dislike for her at first due to her talkative nature. Having memories of that secretary at that Government establishment whose sole purpose in life was to frustrate you and prevent you from seeing whoever you wanted to see? Thats Clara

Clara Ikemba (Rita Dominic)

THE MEETING is a microcosm of the Nigerian way of life which has been permeated by corruption as we see by the number of people kept waiting by Clara,(Some as long as a month) a frustrated secretary who uses the opportunity to enhance her own importance and the boot licking that goes on to accomplish something as simple as meeting a minister. The personalities in the minister’s reception come from a wide spectrum of Nigerian life ranging from a Hausa Alhaja and a talkative Igbo woman who constitutes a nuisance to everybody to a Grammer blowing professor turned Government consultant (Basorge Tariah jr), a hypocritical businesswoman (Kate Henshaw) and even a retired general. There is also the minister’s girlfriend (Nse Ikpe Etim) who portrays the loudmouthed street girl who lives in luxury and is willing to shout it to the world and the businessman(Chinedu Ikezie) whose hotel is to be demolished by the govt. Most of the characters are well scripted and believable from the way they were portrayed on the big screen and we can easily relate to them. The romantic element between Makinde (a middle aged man) and Ejura (A NYSC corper in her twenties) is also a breathe of fresh air from the normal sugar daddy/sugarbabe stuff found in most stories and is well told. Most of the story takes place in the minister’s meeting room where one bureacratic bottleneck or the other (including unplanned VIP visits) scuttles Makinde’s plan and he has to rethink his resistance to corruption as the appointment starts to slip from his hand. There’s also a lot of comedy from the characters in the meeting room who try to curry Clara’s favor and take out their tensions on each other..

If there’s anything you have got to see this movie for its Rita Dominic’s acting as Clara. Having soggy skin and droppy eyelids (Nice work from the make up artiste) Rita deviates from her normal lover girl roles to do something more challenging and it pays off. This is the stuff that award winning performances are made of and I won’t be surprised if she retains the AMAA best actress award for 2012. (I will happily vote for that).

The Abuja scenery adds to the beautiful cinematography of the picture.This combines well with the soundtracks which syncs well with the scenes and involve music from top Nigerian musicians including P squares”s chop my money and wait for this…Pastor Chris Okotie’s 1980″s SECULAR song “I need someone” (Guess some of you knew didn’t know that.Now you know why he has the good dress sense and…) Combined with a well written screenplay THE MEETING tells a normal Nigerian story that we can all relate to including the growing affection between Makinde and  the fiesty Ejura who slowly wins his heart after his initial dislike for her. We also see aspects of the unique Nigerian culture with the constant visits of colorful groups of people (Politicians, Villagers, Kinsmen, Royal fathers etc) to the minister.

On the whole THE MEETING does well in all aspects of production. Yes there are a few minor defects but the overall quality of the movie and the beautiful story telling is enough for you to overlook them.The movie has grossed more than N40 million at the cinemas which ranks it as one of the highest grossing Nigerian movies at the cinemas.This are the type of movies that Nollywood should be aiming for and cinema goers should be supporting. So if you can, go and check it out at the cinemas or if it’s unavailable wait for the DVD. I promise you it will be worth it.

The New “Nollywood”by Jovi Babs

At the mention of the word “Nollywood”, guess the first thing that comes to mind are those shoddy home videos which tend to insult the potential viewer(s) intelligence who gets to part with their money for a “part 1-4” story-line that can fit into one part. Interestingly for the “greedy” marketers who turned producers (at the detriment of authentic film makers) it seems the saying; “everyday for the thief but one day for the owner” is apt here as they continue to record declining sales due to the “utter rubbish” they churn out as films. 
  
 But hey! call me a prophet of God as i use the phrase “a wind of change is blowing over the industry”, Halleluyah! With the re-introduction of the cinemas and the standards they set for Nigeria film makers are aggressively upping their game. We can now see films produced with nice cinematography and good story telling. Figurine, Phone Swap, Ije, The Meeting, Streets of Calabar, Maami, Married but Living Single and Last Flight to Abuja are some of the films that have showcased the brilliance of practitioners of the new Nollywood cinema movement.

Ok! Let me give you a hint of films that are coming out soon so that you know what to look out for when going to the cinema or buying DVDs. Here are the first ones.

AWAKENING –

This is a dark thriller which tells the story of a young man whose life takes a turn after a series of bad dreams come true. With the help of a journalist he is able to uncover the truth about the dreams and their lives. The movie which was directed by UNILAG theater arts graduate James Omokwe stars CJ Ukeje, Kehinde Bankole and Femi Brainard and should be in cinemas in February.

ALAN POZA

The well known outspoken director Charles Novia returns to the big screen with a romantic comedy called Alan poza. It looks at the adventures of a music label executive as he searches for true love admist the temptations and uncertainties around him. It features OC Ukeje, Belinda Effah, Nobert Young and Ghanian actress Beverly Nayah. Charles has always strived to achieve quality production even though sometimes may come short but I hope this movie lives up to that reputation when it hits cinemas on February 16th .

LIONS OF 76

If there’s a movie everybody is expecting right now it should be Lion’s of ’76 a film. The unsuccessful military coup that took the life of then military head of state Gen Murtala Mohammed in 1976. The story synopsis is not out officially but feelers say that the story revolves around  a soldier who was wrongly convicted of taking part in the coup and the consequences on his family. The military officers’ wives play a prominent role in the film as we see a lot of betrayals, dealmakings and back stabbings in the movie. The film boasts of an authentic 70’s look and was directed by Izu Ojukwu who directed the movie projects for the now rested Amstel box office reality shows (Sitanda, Cindy’s notes, Stillwaters etc) The film parades Ramsey Noah, Rita Dominic, Chidi Mokeme and Ibinabo Fibresima.  It should be premiering anytime soon.
